Soothing sounds: study tests music showers to ease ICU family anxiety

NCT ID NCT07506954

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether playing music through a sound shower in the ICU waiting room can reduce anxiety in family members. 224 adult relatives of intubated patients will be randomly assigned to wait with or without the music. Their anxiety levels will be measured using a standard questionnaire after 20-30 minutes.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Musical intervention (L-shaped musical sequence) broadcast by a sound shower

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, drug-free way to lower anxiety for families waiting in intensive care units.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial testing a short-term effect on anxiety. The music may not reduce anxiety more than silence, and results may not apply to all hospital settings.
