NCT ID NCT07379996
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study tested whether music therapy could improve hope, quality of life, and social functioning in 12 people with severe mental illness living in the community. Participants chose music to listen to during 12 sessions over 20 weeks, followed by a conversation with a nurse. The study is small and exploratory, so results are preliminary.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
passive music therapy (listening to chosen music with guided dialogue)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple, low-cost way to improve hope and social functioning for people with severe mental illness.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study with only 12 participants and no control group, so results may not be reliable or generalizable. The intervention is also time-intensive (12 sessions over 20 weeks).
