Could a daily mushroom help shield aging brains?

NCT ID NCT07775833

This trial is taking on new participants right now.

First seen Aug 20, 2026 · Last updated Aug 21, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This trial tests whether taking golden oyster mushroom powder every day for two years can help preserve memory and thinking in middle-aged and older adults who are at higher risk for dementia. Around 600 community-living adults aged 45 to 80, who have a family history of dementia or notice their own memory slipping, will take either the mushroom powder or a placebo. Researchers will track changes in cognitive tests and blood markers to see if this simple dietary addition might offer brain protection.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
Golden oyster mushroom powder (Pleurotus citrinopileatus) containing ergothioneine
What this could lead to
If effective, this could point toward a simple dietary supplement to help preserve memory and thinking in people at higher risk for dementia.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage trial, and results may not show a clear benefit. Daily mushroom powder for 24 months may be hard for some to stick with, and individual responses can vary.
