New ultrasound test could spot muscle loss in seniors and cancer patients

NCT ID NCT01484821

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tested a new ultrasound technique (ARFI) to measure muscle stiffness in 65 volunteers: young adults (18-30), healthy older adults (70+), and older adults undergoing cancer treatment. The goal was to see if this method could help screen for sarcopenia (age-related muscle loss) better than current tests. Participants had physical exams, nutrition assessments, and muscle stiffness measurements at one or two visits over six months.
