New Light-Based scanner could spot cancer without needles
NCT ID NCT05488483
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tests whether a new imaging technique called multispectral optoacoustic tomography (MSOT) can visualize breast cancer and melanoma tumors. Twelve participants will have MSOT scans before their standard biopsy or treatment. The goal is to see if MSOT can detect tumors and measure oxygen levels, which might help improve cancer diagnosis in the future.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Multispectral Optoacoustic Tomography (MSOT) imaging
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to a new, non-invasive way to detect and monitor tumors without radiation or contrast dyes.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small feasibility study with only 12 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The technology is still experimental and may not work as hoped.
