MRSA decolonization kit trial stalls after just one patient
NCT ID NCT05696132
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a complete kit using povidone-iodine (Betadine) gel, soap, and mouthwash to clear MRSA bacteria from patients' noses, skin, and mouths. The goal was to see if the kit could quickly decolonize MRSA within 6 hours. However, the trial was terminated early after enrolling only one participant, so no reliable results are available.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
povidone-iodine (Betadine) gel, antiseptic soap, and mouthwash
What this could lead to
If it worked, this could offer an alternative to standard MRSA decolonization treatments that are facing drug resistance.
What could go wrong
The trial was terminated early with only 1 participant, so no meaningful conclusions can be drawn. Povidone-iodine may not effectively clear MRSA from all body sites in real-world use.
