Radical sinus surgery may beat standard for tough nasal polyps

NCT ID NCT04852562

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study compared two types of sinus surgery for people with chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps that involve a type of inflammation called eosinophilic. One surgery (MRESS) removes more tissue, including the middle turbinate, while the standard surgery (FESS) preserves it. The goal was to see if the more radical approach improves quality of life and reduces the need for repeat surgery. 110 Chinese patients were followed for a year after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

modified radical endoscopic sinus surgery (MRESS)

What this could lead to

If MRESS proves better, it could offer a more effective surgical option for people with stubborn nasal polyps, reducing symptoms and the need for repeat surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, single-center study (110 patients) with no blinding. Results may not apply to all patients, and more radical surgery carries higher risks like bleeding or scarring.
