Sound waves vs. seizures: new ultrasound treatment for epilepsy

NCT ID NCT07249190

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This early-stage trial tests whether focused ultrasound waves can safely reduce seizures in 20 adults with drug-resistant epilepsy. The procedure uses MRI guidance to precisely target a small brain area involved in seizure spread. Researchers will monitor side effects and seizure frequency for two years to see if this non-surgical approach works.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

MR-guided focused ultrasound (procedure)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could offer a non-invasive option to reduce seizures in people with drug-resistant epilepsy, potentially improving quality of life.

What could go wrong

This is a very early Phase 1 trial with only 20 people. The procedure may not reduce seizures, and risks include side effects from brain ablation, MRI claustrophobia, or radiation exposure.
