Talking through pain: could counseling unlock better exercise for knee arthritis?
NCT ID NCT07767812
First seen Aug 17, 2026 · Last updated Aug 17, 2026
Summary
This trial tests whether adding motivational interviewing—a counseling style that strengthens personal motivation—to a standard exercise program helps people with knee osteoarthritis feel more confident about exercising and managing pain. About 56 participants will be randomly assigned to receive either exercise alone or exercise plus motivational interviewing. Researchers will measure changes in pain self-efficacy, exercise behavior, pain intensity, and physical function over several weeks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Motivational interviewing, a counseling approach delivered in face-to-face sessions, added to a neuromuscular exercise and home exercise program.
- What this could lead to
- If effective, this approach could enhance exercise adherence and pain management for people with knee osteoarthritis, potentially improving daily function without additional medication.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial, and results may not apply broadly. The benefit of motivational interviewing over exercise alone is uncertain, and outcomes depend on participant engagement.
