Texting to beat HIV: simple phone messages could help women stay healthy
NCT ID NCT06745050
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether personalized text messages can help HIV-positive women in Africa who sell sex take their antiretroviral therapy (ART) regularly. 350 women will either get standard care or standard care plus text reminders and tips for six months. The goal is to see if more women in the text-message group achieve an undetectable viral load, meaning the virus is well controlled.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
text message support program
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to help HIV+ women stick with their medication and keep the virus under control.
What could go wrong
This is a behavioral intervention, not a new drug. Success depends on whether text messages alone can change long-term habits, and results may not apply to other groups.
