Blood test could replace gadolinium scans for MS monitoring

NCT ID NCT07292480

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing whether monthly blood tests for a nerve damage marker (neurofilament light chain) can detect hidden disease activity in people with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (MS) earlier than standard yearly MRI scans. The goal is to reduce the need for gadolinium-based contrast agents in MRI and allow faster treatment adjustments. The study will compare 84 participants on monthly blood monitoring against standard care.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

monthly blood test for neurofilament light chain (pNfL)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a simpler, safer way to monitor MS and catch silent disease activity early, allowing faster treatment changes.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase study. The blood test may not reliably detect all hidden activity, and results may not change long-term outcomes.
