Ancient herbal mix may shorten hospital stays for COPD patients

NCT ID NCT07403032

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether adding a modified Chinese herbal decoction (Ma Xing Shi Gan) to standard care helps people with COPD flare-ups recover faster. Two hundred participants will be randomly assigned to receive either standard care alone or standard care plus the herbal formula for 14 days. The main goal is to see if the herbal treatment shortens hospital stays, with additional measures for symptom relief and breathing ability.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

modified Ma Xing Shi Gan Decoction (a Chinese herbal formula)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a safe, add-on herbal treatment to help people recover faster from COPD flare-ups and reduce time in the hospital.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with no phase designation, so results are uncertain. The herbal mixture may not work better than standard care alone, and individual responses can vary.
