Hidden brain fog in liver disease: new study sheds light

NCT ID NCT04807803

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looked at 82 adults with cirrhosis and portal hypertension (high blood pressure in the liver) to find out how many have minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE) — a mild form of brain fog that can affect thinking. Researchers used simple blood tests and thinking exercises like naming animals and connecting numbers to check for MHE. The goal was to better understand how liver problems and blood vessel changes in the belly relate to subtle brain changes.
