Can mindfulness stop psychosis before it starts?

NCT ID NCT06870305

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a 5-session group mindfulness program can reduce distress and prevent psychosis in 270 young people (ages 18-30) at ultra-high risk. Participants will either receive the mindfulness training plus usual care, or usual care alone. The goal is to see if mindfulness helps ease symptoms and lowers the risk of a first psychotic episode.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Mindfulness-based training for psychosis (MBTP) - a group therapy program

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a non-drug way to reduce distress and lower the chance of developing psychosis in young people at high risk.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial with no results yet. The mindfulness program is short (5 sessions over 1 month), and its long-term effects are unknown. It may not prevent psychosis for everyone.
