Mindfulness may ease the burden of painful skin disease

NCT ID NCT05642039

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tested whether a 6-week online mindfulness course could improve quality of life for people with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), a chronic skin condition that causes painful boils. Thirty-seven adults with HS took part. Half attended weekly mindfulness classes and did guided audio exercises at home, while the other half received a short educational course. Researchers measured changes in quality of life using standard questionnaires.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Mindfulness training (behavioral intervention)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a low-cost, non-drug way to help HS patients feel better emotionally and cope with their condition.

What could go wrong

This is a small, completed study with only 37 participants. The results may not apply to everyone, and mindfulness does not treat the skin disease itself.
