Veterans study links mild brain injury to dementia clues
NCT ID NCT04124029
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study is looking at 800 veterans to see if mild traumatic brain injury (concussion) increases the risk of dementia later in life. Researchers will test memory, brain waves, brain scans, and proteins in blood and spinal fluid. The goal is to find early warning signs of diseases like Alzheimer's and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). No treatment is being tested—this is a fact-finding study.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help identify early signs of dementia in people with a history of mild brain injury, leading to better monitoring or future treatments.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a treatment trial. It may not prove that brain injury directly causes dementia, and results may take years to apply.
