Personalized antibiotic spray aims to stop deadly pneumonia in ICU patients

NCT ID NCT07463339

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This pilot study tests whether rapid analysis of the airway microbiome can guide inhaled antibiotics to prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in ICU patients. 70 adults on ventilators will receive either microbiome-guided inhaled antibiotics or a placebo for up to 5 days. The goal is to see if this personalized prevention strategy is feasible and safe.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

inhaled antibiotics (tobramycin, aztreonam, vancomycin)

What this could lead to

If successful, this approach could reduce pneumonia rates in ventilated ICU patients by targeting antibiotics to those most likely to benefit.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study (70 people) testing feasibility, not yet proven to prevent pneumonia. Inhaled antibiotics may cause side effects or not work as hoped.
