Head-to-Head: can a cheaper drug match a biologic for artery disease?

NCT ID NCT03892785

First seen Nov 26, 2025 · Last updated Jun 11, 2026 · Updated 22 times

Summary

This study compares two treatments—methotrexate (a common, low-cost drug) and tocilizumab (a newer, expensive biologic)—for giant cell arteritis, a blood vessel disease that can cause headaches, vision loss, and stroke. The goal is to see if methotrexate works as well as tocilizumab at preventing relapses while reducing the need for long-term steroids. About 230 adults aged 50 and older with active giant cell arteritis are taking part.
