Which painkiller works best after gynecologic cancer surgery? new trial aims to find out

NCT ID NCT06525740

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study compares two opioid pain medicines—methadone given through an IV and hydromorphone injected into the spine—for pain relief after gynecologic cancer surgery. About 140 women will take part, and researchers will measure their pain scores and side effects like itching and breathing problems. The goal is to see if methadone works as well as the spinal injection for controlling pain after a major abdominal surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Methadone and hydromorphone

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that methadone is as good as or better than intrathecal hydromorphone for pain control after gynecologic cancer surgery, potentially simplifying pain management.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial (140 participants) comparing two existing drugs, so it won't produce a new treatment. Results may not apply to all patients or surgeries.
