Could a common diabetes drug help obese nigerians lose weight?
NCT ID NCT07297290
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether metformin, a drug already used for diabetes, can help obese but non-diabetic Black Nigerians lose weight and lower their heart disease risk. Researchers will give 220 participants either metformin or a placebo for several months, tracking changes in weight, waist size, and insulin resistance. The goal is to find an affordable, accessible weight-loss option for a population with limited access to expensive treatments.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Metformin
What this could lead to
If it works, this could provide an affordable, accessible weight-loss option for obese individuals in Nigeria and similar populations.
What could go wrong
This is a single-site trial in a specific population, so results may not apply broadly. Metformin's weight-loss effects are modest, and side effects like gastrointestinal issues are possible.
