A common diabetes drug may protect against hormone therapy's metabolic side effects
NCT ID NCT03031821
First seen Jul 29, 2026 · Last updated Jul 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This phase 3 trial tests whether metformin, a standard diabetes medication, can prevent or reverse metabolic syndrome in men with prostate cancer who are starting androgen deprivation therapy (ADT). Metabolic syndrome—a cluster of conditions like high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and excess belly fat—is a common side effect of ADT. The study randomly assigns 166 participants to receive either metformin or a placebo for 18 months, and measures how many develop metabolic syndrome by the end of treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- metformin
- What this could lead to
- If it works, metformin could become a simple way to reduce metabolic side effects from hormone therapy in prostate cancer patients.
- What could go wrong
- This is a mid-stage trial with 166 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. Metformin can cause gastrointestinal side effects.
