New MRI dye could spot brain tumors without surgery
NCT ID NCT04772456
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study tests a new type of MRI that uses a special substance called hyperpolarized pyruvate to see if it can more accurately diagnose brain tumors (gliomas). Five adults with suspected or known gliomas will receive this injection before a scan, and the results will be compared to standard MRI and tissue samples from surgery or biopsy. The goal is to see if this method is safe and can provide extra information to help diagnose brain cancer.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Hyperpolarized 13C-Pyruvate injection (a special dye for MRI scans)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a more accurate, non-invasive way to diagnose brain tumors without needing a biopsy.
What could go wrong
This is a very early, small study with only 5 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The new MRI method may not be more accurate than standard scans.
