Mesh removal vs. no removal: which eases groin pain after hernia surgery?

NCT ID NCT05484635

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether removing the surgical mesh used in hernia repair can reduce long-term groin pain. About 70 adults who have had pain for more than 6 months after minimally invasive hernia surgery will be randomly assigned to either have the mesh removed or not. Researchers will compare pain levels between the two groups to see if removal makes a difference.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

surgical mesh removal

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that removing the mesh is a better way to relieve long-term groin pain after hernia surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 70 people. It may not prove that mesh removal works for everyone, and surgery itself carries risks like infection or nerve damage.
