New brain radiation technique aims to shield memory in cancer patients

NCT ID NCT07248228

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study is for people whose cancer has spread to the brain. It compares two types of whole brain radiation: one that avoids only the memory center (hippocampus) and one that also avoids other brain areas tied to thinking. The goal is to see which better preserves memory and cognitive function. About 90 participants will receive daily radiation sessions along with a memory-protecting drug.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

radiation therapy (whole brain radiotherapy with memory avoidance)

What this could lead to

If this approach works, it could help people with brain metastases keep their memory and thinking skills longer during treatment.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial with only 90 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The new technique may not protect memory better than the current standard.
