New laser device could catch spreading melanoma cells in real time

NCT ID NCT01776905

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study is testing a new device that uses light and sound to detect melanoma cancer cells flowing in the blood, without needing a blood draw. The goal is to see if it can find these cells faster and more sensitively than current lab tests. About 75 people with melanoma will be tested, and each session takes about 90 minutes.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Photoacoustic flow cytometry (PAFC) device

What this could lead to

If successful, this device could allow doctors to detect melanoma cells spreading in the blood much earlier than current tests, potentially improving monitoring and treatment decisions.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage, small trial (75 people) testing a prototype device. It may not work as hoped, and results may not apply to all patients. The device is not yet proven or available for routine use.
