Mediterranean diet shows promise for metabolic health in psychiatric patients
NCT ID NCT07164014
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This completed study tested whether a Mediterranean diet could improve metabolic syndrome markers in 30 hospitalized adults with psychiatric conditions. Participants followed either a Mediterranean diet or a standard hospital diet for 8 weeks, then switched. Researchers measured weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, cholesterol, and inflammation. The goal was to see if the Mediterranean diet offers better metabolic control for this group.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Mediterranean diet
What this could lead to
If successful, this diet could help manage metabolic syndrome in people with psychiatric conditions, reducing their risk of heart disease and diabetes.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed crossover study with only 30 participants. Results may not apply to all psychiatric patients, and dietary changes can be hard to maintain long-term.
