Medical cannabis vouchers may cut opioid use in chronic pain patients
NCT ID NCT04495725
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether giving adults with chronic pain discounted vouchers for medical cannabis soft-gel capsules could help them reduce their opioid painkiller use. 270 participants were randomly assigned to receive vouchers for placebo or cannabis capsules with different THC-to-CBD ratios. The main goal was to see if the vouchers led to lower total opioid doses over the study period.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
medical cannabis soft-gel capsules (various THC:CBD ratios)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that providing discounted medical cannabis helps people with chronic pain lower their opioid use, potentially reducing opioid-related harms.
What could go wrong
This is a completed trial with 270 participants, but results may not apply to all pain types or cannabis products. The use of vouchers may not reflect real-world access or long-term effects.
