Could MDMA help new moms battling PTSD and opioid addiction?
NCT ID NCT05219175
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This small study is testing whether MDMA-assisted therapy can help new mothers who have both post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and opioid use disorder. Fifteen participants will receive MDMA in a controlled setting along with therapy sessions. The goal is to see if this approach is safe and feasible, and whether it might improve PTSD symptoms, reduce opioid use, and strengthen the bond between mother and baby.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
MDMA (assisted therapy)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a new treatment option for postpartum people struggling with both PTSD and opioid use disorder.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-phase study with only 15 participants. It is designed to test safety and feasibility, not effectiveness. MDMA is a controlled substance with potential risks, and results may not apply to broader populations.
