New surgery aims to stop lymphedema before it starts
NCT ID NCT06650592
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests a surgical technique called immediate lymphatic reconstruction (ILR) done at the same time as lymph node removal for cancer. The goal is to reconnect tiny lymph channels to nearby veins to prevent lymphedema, a painful arm swelling. Researchers will measure arm size and use special devices to see if ILR works. They will also explore how skin bacteria might affect lymphedema risk.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Immediate lymphatic reconstruction (ILR) surgery
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide strong evidence that ILR prevents lymphedema after lymph node removal, potentially making it a standard preventive procedure.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage, single-center study with only 90 participants. The surgery is new and not yet widely covered by insurance, so results may not apply broadly.
