New imaging technique could Fine-Tune ventilator settings for lung patients

NCT ID NCT07379242

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This observational study will enroll 50 mechanically ventilated patients with acute respiratory failure to compare two methods of assessing lung recruitment: the recruitment-to-inflation ratio (R/I ratio) and 2D/3D electrical impedance tomography (EIT). Participants will undergo a standardized PEEP titration procedure while being monitored with both techniques. The goal is to see if these methods give consistent results, which could help doctors better tailor ventilator settings in the future.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could improve how doctors set ventilator settings for patients with acute respiratory failure, potentially leading to better lung protection.

What could go wrong

This is a small observational study (50 participants) that does not test a treatment. It only compares measurement methods, so direct patient benefit is not guaranteed.
