Yearly CT scans aim to catch lung cancer early in mexican smokers and Wood-Smoke exposed
NCT ID NCT06535451
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study will give yearly low-dose CT scans to 1,000 people in Mexico who are at high risk for lung cancer—including heavy smokers, former smokers, and those exposed to wood smoke. The goal is to see if regular screening can find lung cancer at an earlier, more treatable stage. Participants will also have lung function tests and blood tests over three years, with follow-up lasting up to 10 years.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) scan
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that annual LDCT screening helps catch lung cancer earlier in high-risk populations, potentially improving survival rates.
What could go wrong
This is an observational screening study, not a treatment trial. It may not prove that screening reduces deaths, and false positives could cause unnecessary anxiety or procedures.
