Baking soda could help doctors see lung blood flow in real time
NCT ID NCT07542366
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study tests whether sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) can be used safely as a contrast agent to map lung blood flow using electrical impedance tomography (EIT) in adults on breathing machines. Researchers will compare it to standard hypertonic saline in 41 ICU patients. The goal is to see if this method produces clear images and is safe, potentially offering a simpler bedside tool for assessing lung function.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
sodium bicarbonate (5%) and hypertonic saline (10%)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a safer, cheaper way to assess lung blood flow at the bedside in critically ill patients.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study (41 people) testing feasibility, not effectiveness. The contrast agents may not produce clear images, or safety issues could arise.
