Lung biopsy without a breathing tube? small study tests a gentler approach
NCT ID NCT05722340
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This pilot study compares two ways to perform a lung biopsy for people with undetermined interstitial lung disease. One method uses a breathing tube and deep anesthesia (standard), while the other uses only mild sedation and numbing medicine. The goal is to see if the gentler method gives biopsy samples that are just as good for making a clear diagnosis. Only 24 adults will take part, and the study focuses on how confident pathologists are in their diagnosis from the tissue samples.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a less invasive anesthesia method (NIVATS) provides equally good biopsy samples for diagnosing lung diseases.
What could go wrong
This is a very small pilot study with only 24 participants, so results may not apply widely. The main goal is to compare biopsy quality, not to test a new treatment.
