Light weights, big gains: study shows lifting to failure works wonders

NCT ID NCT07412600

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looked at whether lifting light weights (30% of your max) until you can't do another rep builds muscle and strength as well as lifting heavy weights (75% of your max) in healthy young men who don't usually lift. Twenty-two men did leg exercises three times a week for six weeks. The results showed both groups got similar increases in muscle size and strength, suggesting that pushing to failure matters more than how much you lift.
