Less may be more: smaller dose of pain drug could be safer after gallbladder surgery

First seen Apr 05, 2026 · Last updated Jun 22, 2026 · Updated 12 times

Summary

This study compares a low volume of the painkiller bupivacaine to the standard volume for a nerve block after gallbladder surgery. The goal is to see if the lower dose controls pain just as well while reducing the risk of side effects. About 96 adults having planned gallbladder surgery will take part.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

bupivacaine

What this could lead to

If it works, this could lead to safer pain control after gallbladder surgery with less risk of side effects from the anesthetic.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 96 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The lower volume might not control pain as well as the standard dose.
