Common antibiotic shows promise in keeping nasal polyps away after surgery
NCT ID NCT07316959
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether taking a low dose of the antibiotic clarithromycin for three months after sinus surgery could prevent nasal polyps from coming back early. 100 adults who had surgery for nasal polyps were split into two groups: one received the antibiotic plus standard care, the other standard care alone. After 12 weeks, only 12% of the antibiotic group had polyp recurrence, compared to 32% in the control group, and they also reported better symptom scores.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
clarithromycin (a macrolide antibiotic)
What this could lead to
If confirmed, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to reduce the chance of nasal polyps coming back after surgery.
What could go wrong
This was a small, single-center study with only 100 participants. The results need to be repeated in larger, longer trials before becoming standard care.
