Could a tiny dose of buprenorphine spark social drive in schizophrenia?

NCT ID NCT05778591

First seen May 02, 2026 · Last updated May 13, 2026 · Updated 3 times

Summary

This study looks at whether a very low dose of buprenorphine, a drug used for opioid addiction and depression, can boost social motivation in 40 adults with schizophrenia. Many people with this condition struggle with wanting to connect with others or avoiding social situations, and no current medications address this. Participants will take either the drug or a placebo in two lab sessions and complete tasks that measure their social drive. The goal is to see if buprenorphine can help ease this disabling symptom.
