Low-Dose blood thinner may keep dangerous clots at bay

NCT ID NCT04168203

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 28 times

Summary

This study tested whether taking a low dose of the blood thinner apixaban for a longer time could prevent blood clots from returning in people who already had a clot caused by a temporary risk factor (like surgery or immobility). 600 adults at high risk for another clot were randomly assigned to receive either low-dose apixaban or a placebo. The goal was to see if the low-dose treatment could safely reduce the chance of another clot without causing major bleeding.
