Machine perfusion could double usable donor livers and slash transplant wait times
NCT ID NCT06874296
First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 13, 2026 · Updated 23 times
Summary
This study tests a method called normothermic machine perfusion, which keeps donated livers working outside the body so doctors can check their quality. The goal is to safely use livers that were previously considered unsuitable, helping 186 people on the transplant waiting list get a transplant sooner. Participants are randomly assigned to either receive a machine-checked liver or follow the usual transplant process, and researchers will measure how quickly they get a transplant and how well they do afterward.
