Machine perfusion could double usable donor livers and cut wait times

NCT ID NCT06874296

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a machine that keeps donated livers working outside the body can help doctors safely use livers that were previously considered too risky for transplant. About 186 adults on the liver transplant waiting list will be randomly assigned to either receive a standard transplant or be offered a liver that passed a quality check after at least four hours on the machine. The main goal is to see if this approach shortens the time to transplant and increases the number of usable livers.
