NCT ID NCT07384156
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times
Summary
This study looks at whether adding decoding and encoding practice to the ALLSTAR literacy program helps children with complex communication needs learn to read better. Sixty children aged 5-12 who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) will be split into two groups: one gets standard ALLSTAR, the other gets ALLSTAR with extra lessons. Researchers will measure reading skills at the start, middle, and end of the 60-lesson program to see which approach works best.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- ALLSTAR literacy program with Integrated Decoding and Encoding instruction
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could point toward more effective teaching strategies to help children with limited or no speech improve their reading and writing skills.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage study with only 60 participants, so results may not apply to all learners. The intervention is behavioral, not a drug, so improvements may be modest.
