New fingerprick test and antibiotic aim to stop leprosy before it starts
NCT ID NCT06222372
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study in Bangladesh tests whether giving a single dose of the antibiotic rifampin to people who live with or near leprosy patients can prevent infection. Researchers will use a new fingerprick blood test to measure infection markers before and after treatment. The goal is to find an easy way to stop leprosy from spreading.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Rifampin (antibiotic)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a simple way to identify and treat people at risk of leprosy before they develop the disease, helping to stop its spread.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study focused on measuring infection markers, not preventing disease directly. The test and treatment may not work as hoped in real-world settings.
