New leprosy prevention combo could slash infections in high-risk communities

NCT ID NCT05597280

First seen May 21, 2026 · Last updated May 21, 2026

Summary

This large phase 3 study tests whether a new two-dose combination of bedaquiline and rifampicin can better prevent leprosy than the current standard single-dose rifampicin. About 124,000 people living within 100 meters of a leprosy patient in the Comoros will receive either the new combo or the standard drug. The goal is to see if the new regimen reduces new leprosy cases more effectively.
