Laser vs. scalpel: which heals anal fistula faster?
NCT ID NCT07681531
First seen Jul 02, 2026 ยท Last updated Jul 02, 2026
Summary
This study compares two ways to treat uncomplicated perianal fistula: conventional open surgery (fistulectomy) and a newer laser ablation technique. About 72 adults with a single, simple fistula tract will be randomly assigned to one of the two procedures. Researchers will track how quickly each group returns to normal activities and whether the fistula comes back within six months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Laser ablation
- What this could lead to
- If laser ablation works better, patients may recover faster and have a lower chance of the fistula coming back.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with only 72 people, so results may not apply to everyone. Laser ablation is still being tested and might not be better than standard surgery.
