Laser shows promise for treating implant gum disease
NCT ID NCT07524153
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether using a 940 nm diode laser along with standard deep cleaning helps treat peri-implantitis, a gum infection around dental implants. 39 adults with infected implants were split into three groups: cleaning alone, laser alone, or both. Researchers measured gum health and levels of a protein called S100A8, which signals inflammation. The goal was to see if the laser reduces infection and inflammation better than cleaning alone.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
940 nm diode laser
What this could lead to
If successful, this could point toward a more effective treatment for peri-implantitis, reducing inflammation and improving gum health around dental implants.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study with only 39 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The laser is an add-on, not a standalone cure, and long-term benefits are unclear.
