Which oxygen strategy saves more lives? large trial puts three methods to the test
NCT ID NCT05812911
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This trial tests whether high-flow nasal cannula oxygen or noninvasive ventilation works better than standard oxygen therapy for ICU patients with acute respiratory failure. About 1,470 adults will be randomly assigned to one of the three methods. The main goal is to see which approach lowers the chance of death within 28 days.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
oxygen therapy (high-flow nasal cannula, noninvasive ventilation, standard oxygen)
What this could lead to
If one method proves superior, it could become the standard approach to help more ICU patients survive acute respiratory failure.
What could go wrong
The trial is large but results may show no clear winner, or benefits may not apply to all types of respiratory failure. Risks include discomfort or injury from the devices.
