Ultrasound may reveal hidden causes of ventilator weaning failure

NCT ID NCT02723565

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study explores whether ultrasound can identify the reasons some patients fail to come off a mechanical ventilator. Researchers will scan the heart, lungs, and diaphragm of adults who have been on a ventilator for at least 24 hours and have not passed a spontaneous breathing trial. The goal is to see if ultrasound can accurately diagnose the physiological problem behind weaning failure, which could help doctors choose better treatments in the future.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If ultrasound can pinpoint the cause of weaning failure, doctors could tailor treatments to help more patients breathe on their own sooner.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early study with only 7 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. Ultrasound may not be accurate enough to replace standard methods.
