Can kids build muscle like adults? new study tests flywheel vs. weight stack training
NCT ID NCT06698055
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This completed study looked at how children (ages 9-13) and adults (ages 18-50) respond to 12 weeks of resistance exercise using either flywheel or traditional weight stack machines. 91 healthy participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: flywheel training, weight stack training, or a control group. Researchers measured muscle growth and strength changes, and checked for any negative effects on children's growth plates. The goal was to understand if children can safely gain muscle from resistance training and how their response compares to adults.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
resistance exercise (flywheel or weight stack devices)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that resistance exercise is safe and effective for building muscle in children, similar to adults.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed study focused on healthy volunteers, not a treatment for any disease. Results may not apply to other populations or exercise types.
