Could a High-Fat, Low-Carb diet help men breathe easier with COPD?

NCT ID NCT07664111

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This pilot study investigates whether an 8-week ketogenic diet—high in fat and very low in carbs—can improve lung function, reduce inflammation, and boost exercise capacity in men aged 40–75 with mild-to-moderate COPD. Participants are randomly assigned to either the ketogenic diet or standard dietary advice. The study aims to see if this dietary approach is feasible and offers any benefits for managing COPD.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

ketogenic diet

What this could lead to

If effective, this diet could become a complementary approach to help manage COPD symptoms and improve quality of life.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 34 men, so results may not apply to everyone. The diet is restrictive and may be hard to follow long-term.
