Ketamine may offer better pain relief during biopsies than standard sedation
NCT ID NCT07040163
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether ketamine, combined with midazolam, can reduce pain better than the usual fentanyl and midazolam combination for patients undergoing biopsies or drainage procedures. About 276 adults will be randomly assigned to one of the two sedation methods. Researchers will track pain scores, side effects, and patient satisfaction to see if ketamine improves the experience without raising risks.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
ketamine
What this could lead to
If ketamine works better, it could offer a safer, more comfortable sedation option for common interventional radiology procedures.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase trial with 276 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Ketamine can cause side effects like hallucinations or nausea.
