Can a diabetes drug help teens lose weight? new study investigates
NCT ID NCT06852391
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study looks at whether adding the drug semaglutide (Wegovy®) to a behavioral lifestyle program helps teenagers with obesity lose weight and adapt their metabolism. About 74 teens aged 12-17 will be split into two groups: one gets the lifestyle program alone for 6 months, then adds semaglutide; the other gets both from the start. Researchers will measure how the body's energy use changes, aiming to find better weight management strategies.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
semaglutide (Wegovy®)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that combining semaglutide with a lifestyle program is more effective for weight management in teens than lifestyle changes alone.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study (74 participants) focused on metabolic changes, not long-term weight loss or safety. Semaglutide can cause side effects like nausea and vomiting, and results may not apply to all teens with obesity.
